MEDET is a rice smallholder farmer’s organization that grows, processes, stores and provides logistic services for its rice produce. The organization comprises of 747 farmers with a Female to Male ratio of 382:305. The farmers are organized into rice clubs to ensure efficient functioning of the project activities.
We grow kilombero rice in Mzenga, Nkhatabay. The project employs five full time staff to overlook project operations. The project has grown from 160 farmers in 2007 to 747 farmers in 2009; in view of this, annual rice production has increased from 37 tons in 2007 to approximately 100 tones. This area was a predominantly cassava growing area however in 2006, we decided to utilize the areas vast potential rice growing area near rivers and marshy areas. We a re currently utilizing approximately 20% of the areas rice growing potential. We have a project site situated about 1 km from T/A Kabunduli’s headquarters. We have onsite a rice mill processing plant with a milling capacity of 1ton of full grain rice per hour and a warehouse with storage capacity of over 300tons. In view of this long-term setup, We grow high quality rice grain and guarantee consistency in quality to our clients.
Since its establishment in 2006 , MEDET has done some commendable approaches to the rural communities of Mzenga, Kavuzi, Mlowe, Chiweta, Chitimba, Nyungwe and Chilumba. These places are located in the districts of Nkhatabay, Rumphi and Karonga in the northern region of Malawi. The MEDET vision is to introduce these activities in other to be identified areas to develop and empower these communities spiritually and economically. This is done through its two internal sections being: Development and Evangelism.
MEDET has several approaches towards spreading of the gospel. There is the Jesus film project; whereby MEDET has got audio visual equipment which is used to show the Jesus film and the passion of Christ movie. Faith Comes by Hearing Is also another project which is partnered with the bible society of Malawi and due to high illiteracy in rural Malawi most people cannot read and write, therefore local communities are given audio bibles translated into the local language to empower them spiritually. These communities are organized into groups called bible listening groups. Apart from the rural communities of Mzenga, and Kavuzi, other areas such as Mlowe, Chiweta, Chitimba, Nyungwe and Chilumba have also benefitted. These places are located in the districts of Nkhatabay, Rumphi and Karonga in the northern region of Malawi
MEDET is registered with the council on Non-Governmental Organization of Malawi and the certificate of tax exemptions by the Malawi Revenue Authority is being processed.
